Female Genital Mutilation

At RCSAS, we recognise that FGM is a form of sexual violence, existing on the continuum of violence against women and girls. All of our services support survivors of FGM in the same way as survivors of other forms of sexual violence, offering a holistic, woman-only and professional service.

Therapy

RCSAS provides professional and confidential face-to-face and group therapy for women aged 13 or older, who have undergone FGM at any time in their lives and who live or work in Surrey or Sussex. The service is provided regardless of ethnicity, religion, culture or socio-economic background or immigration status. Our aim is to help reduce the debilitating impact that FGM has had on every aspect of their lives.

FGM Awareness Raising

We want to prevent young people undergoing FGM in or outside the UK. We want to protect those who are at risk by signposting them to organisations who can offer them assistance. Our aim is to educate perpetrators of FGM and all responsible adults so that everyone knows the debilitating effects of FGM.  In addition, we aim to:

  • Raise awareness of the prevalence of FGM in Surrey and Sussex.

  • Develop good working relationships with a range of agencies working on these issues.

  • Identify and make links with existing projects and community services and to develop joint work/services where appropriate.

  • Give information and assistance to make choices on issues surrounding FGM and to liaise with voluntary and statutory agencies where appropriate.

  • Ensure services working with survivors of FGM are given adequate information, written and verbal, regarding RCSAS’s services.

  • Provide training to organisations around FGM (1 hour or 3 hour long courses).
