Our Helpline

Our sister centre, Rape Crisis South London, run the National Rape Crisis Helpline for female survivors of sexual violence. The helpline is accessible 365 days a year to women and girls who have survived any form of sexual violence, no matter how long ago. We offer specialised, confidential support, information and referral details completely free of charge. The helpline is also available to provide an immediate source of support to friends and family of survivors, as well as other professionals, to help them understand how best to support female survivors of sexual violence.

As a first step many women find it easier to talk in confidence to a worker who understands what they have been through and how they may be feeling. The helpline aims to provide a supportive, non-judgemental, safe space for survivors to release their emotions and break the devastating silence that prevents recovery from these heinous crimes.  We can help explore the effects of sexual violence and look at support services in their area, believing in the caller's power to choose for themselves what they want and are able to do next.

  • Our helpline is open every day of the year from 12-2:30pm and 7-9:30pm.

  • Our helpline is staffed by fully trained empathic female helpline workers.

  • Our helpline is free from UK landlines and Virgin, Orange, EE, O2, 3, T-Mobile, and Vodaphone mobile phone networks. You can also call the helpline through the landline number (which is not Freephone and will show up on your bill) on 0208 683 3300.

Our helpline does:

  • offer confidentiality as the Freephone number ensures our number will not appear on your bill;

  • offer short term specialist emotional support to female survivors of rape and sexual abuse who are 13 years old and above, no matter how long ago the violence took place;

  • offer longer term structured support for more regular callers;

  • offer support to all women and girls, including women who are or have been involved in prostitution, and women who identify as LGBTQ;

  • offer immediate support, information and signposting to appropriate agencies for families, partners or friends of survivors;

  • provide free informative literature on issues related to sexual violence to anyone requiring it, e.g. survivors, agencies, friends, family, supporters of survivors;

  • give survivors and their supporters information about relevant agencies including health care, Independent Sexual Violence Advocates, therapists, Sexual Assault Referral Centres and Rape Crisis centres in their area;

  • form part of the network of support that many survivors need whilst they await counselling;

  • refer male survivors to more appropriate support agencies;

  • provide an empathic and supportive safe space for you to begin talking about your experiences;

  • listen to all survivors with sincerity and non-judgmental acceptance;

  • empower callers to feel worthy enough to access the support they deserve.

  • believe unreservedly.

Our helpline does not:

  • tell women what to do;

  • give legal advice;

  • make assumptions about a caller’s feelings;

  • make a diagnosis of mental health conditions;

  • pressure women to take further action;

  • judge or lie.
