A professional and passionate team working in a centre of excellence, dedicated to the healing and empowerment of survivors of sexual violence.

We have developed a specialist therapeutic model for working with survivors of sexual violence called the Empowerment Model, which is adopted across all of our services. Based on 30 years' experience, feedback and research with survivors themselves, this approach supports an integrative model of therapy which treats each client as a unique individual. We work with the Empowerment Model across all of our services. This holistic model aims to facilitate a woman’s ability to take back choice and to develop trust in her own innate abilities. At Rape Crisis Surrey & Sussex, the women we support are identified as survivors of sexual violence. They have had a moment or many moments of victimisation at the hands of a perpetrator, but they have survived it and that is why they have decided to access the support of our specialist services to heal, find peace and lead the lives they deserve.

Read more about the Empowerment model below, or download Space for Self, published by our sister centre Rape Crisis South London, for a more detailed exploration of how the model is used in therapy with young female survivors of sexual violence.

The Empowerment Model gives a survivor control of her own direction, facilitating her in finding her own power and trusting her to make the right decisions for herself.

Empowerment is about:

  • helping a survivor to explore options without providing direction;

  • valuing the essence of being a woman and the resources which that in itself brings;

  • believing that a woman can care for and nurture herself;

  • helping a survivor to draw on all resources available to her;

  • believing that a survivor is the expert in her knowledge of herself;

  • being congruent and compassionate, woman to woman.

We support this by:

  • demonstrating belief in each client’s ability to know what is right for her;

  • helping set goals, focus and create structure and self-belief;

  • providing education, information and knowledge, sharing our information and tools;

  • helping her find and develop other resources right for her.

We use the Empowerment Model by:

  • putting a survivor in touch with her own power, i.e. allowing her to identify the fact that she has choices and to decide on the choices right for her;

  • never telling a survivor what to do or advising her – she is the expert of and on her life;

  • pointing out constructive actions and ideas and giving positive affirmations.
