We are delighted to be celebrating two years of providing specialist support to women and girls in Surrey and Sussex.
Rape Crisis Surrey and Sussex (RCSAS) opened its doors in 2015 to work with women and girls who have experienced rape or sexual abuse at any time in their lives. In the short time since our launch, we has provided free, independent, specialist support to more than 600 survivors.
Based in Crawley, RCSAS supports women and girls from across Sussex and east Surrey. Services include trauma therapy, independent advocacy, outreach, support to women who have experienced Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), a helpline, and training and prevention work.
Of the 640 women who have accessed support, almost three-quarters (72%) were seeking support for non-recent or ‘historical’ abuse, with the most common type of abuse experienced by women attending the centre being childhood sexual abuse. This highlights the significant level of need for women who are dealing with the impact of abusive experiences from their past.
We also focus on prevention, aiming to reduce and ultimately end sexual violence. More than 200 professionals have received training on the impact of sexual abuse and in responding to disclosures.
Centre Manager Natalie Brook commented: “we are proud to be celebrating two years of providing independent, confidential services to women and girls who have survived sexual violence. The impact of rape or sexual abuse cannot be underestimated and our experience shows the need for specialist support to enable women to recover and lead fulfilled lives. Demand for our services continues to grow and now, more than ever, we need sustainable funding to enable us to meet the needs of local women and girls.”
